Death: a word Mia Baron was all too familiar with since the murder of her parents when she was a young girl. Her drive for vengeance was the reason she became a Death Dealer—a soul guide through the spirit realm—signing her life away in her own blood. Pain forged a concrete wall around her heart and no one or nothing would ever penetrate it…until she got what she desired most—revenge.
Deacon Gage craves justice for his own horrific tragedy that forced him into the same life Mia chose, with the same promise of vengeance dangling just out of reach. His expert training makes him an Elite—one of the few Death Dealers to ever achieve such a status—and no one can shift his focus from the blood he seeks.
But when the two are partnered for yet another job and a heart-shattering case rips open Mia’s heart, Deacon realizes he’s the only one who can save her…at a price that might be too much to pay: opening his heart to her. The clock is ticking and her life hangs on the balance of whether he can truly let go or will hold onto his desire for blood.

I first want to say that  I am always a sucker for a paranormal romance! I was intrigued by this book because I don’t usually read one that doesn’t have to do with vampires or demons. Death Dealers? Sure…what the hell.

This story is about a girl who in turn for finding the man who gruesomely killed her parents and put him to justice sells her soul. In return, she gets to collect the souls. As part of the deal, she gets to work alongside Deacon, a fellow death dealer. There have been feelings building over the years between the two but neither wants to admit it. When Mia almost loses her life, Deacon has no choice but to tell her exactly how he feels.

I like that the book got right to the point. There was no lagging and the story moved quite quickly. There was some background info given which was good to keep you on track but not so much to make it look like filler.

There wasn’t a whole lot of background into Deacon. We find out about his sister and what deal he struck to be a Death Dealer but that’s pretty much it. I would like to know more about him and his story.

I like Mia’s character. She is strong, independent, yet naive and whimsical all at the same time. I think her character can grow to spectacular proportions.

Deacon’s character came off a little arrogant at first but once softened, very genuine. He is the protector and the senior of the two so there is much Mia can learn from him.

There are so many ways this story can go from here. I am anxious to see what Ashley does with it. The idea is solid and the characters are very likable and relateable.

I give this story 4 out of 5 stars. It would have gotten 5 but I felt like the story was too short. LOL. A very well thought out story and well written. I can’t wait for Blood Promise. I also added everything else Ashley has written to my TBR. I say, Ashley, you are on your way to becoming my new favorite author!
